Purpose, in the publication’s words

DAF is committed to Airman and Guardian health as a core component of a lethal, ready force and will provide lactation accommodations for lactating personnel. The procedures to implement lactation accommodations balance the mission readiness needs of units while affording personnel the opportunity to continue lactating. This aligns with the United States Surgeon General’s goals for increasing lactation for a minimum of one year after a child’s birth. Additionally, it follows the American Academy of Pediatrics endorsement of continued human milk consumption as long as mutually desired by parent and child for two years or beyond. The guidance contained herein details procedures for commanders to support lactating personnel within (unit) facilities and duty locations under the control of a unit commander (or equivalent) with necessary accommodations to meet their individual goals, regardless of the time after the child’s birth.

Summary of changes, as printed

This instruction is substantially revised and must be completely reviewed. Policy language is updated for clarity, simplification and to reduce redundancies. It also incorporates formatting changes to align with DAFMAN 90-161, Publishing Processes and Procedures. The term “lactating personnel” replaces “nursing mothers” as a more scientifically accurate designation, recognizing all who lactate, regardless of parental status. The focus of the publication was expanded beyond the physical lactation room to all lactation accommodations. Added minimum authorized time frames for expressing milk, length of accommodation for as long as personnel are lactating, guidelines for dynamic temporary duty travel (TDY), and additional references to other applicable publications inserted throughout.
