About this entitlement

What you need to know — straight from the regulation

Why BAH is prorated during a PCS

Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) is paid at a daily equivalent rate (1/30 of the monthly rate). When a service member executes a PCS mid-month, the Defense Joint Military Pay System (DJMS) splits BAH between the losing-duty-station rate and the gaining-duty-station rate based on the actual day the member reports to the new station — not on pay-period boundaries.

BAH based on the losing duty station continues through the day before the member reports to the new duty station; the gaining-station rate begins the day the member reports (DoD FMR Vol. 7A, Chapter 26, para. 10.10.2.1 and Table 26-38).

How the DJMS cutoff affects when you see the change

Per the DFAS 2026 DJMS/AC processing schedules, each pay cycle has a cutoff after which transactions roll to the next payday. Mid-month pay covers the 1st–15th; on the 2026 schedule its cutoff falls between the 3rd and the 8th of the month. End-of-month pay covers the 16th through month-end; its 2026 cutoff falls between the 19th and the 24th.

If your PCS transaction is entered in DJMS after the cutoff, the prorated BAH change will appear on the following LES rather than the current one — which is why many members see the BAH split land one pay cycle after arrival.

OCONUS transitions

When the losing or gaining duty station is OCONUS, the calculation uses Overseas Housing Allowance (OHA) in place of BAH for that leg. OHA reimburses actual rent up to a location- and grade-specific ceiling, plus a monthly Utility and Recurring Maintenance Allowance (DoD FMR Vol. 7A, Ch. 26, para. 6.1.4); members moving between OHA and BAH locations should expect both a pro-rated allowance and a transition through BAH-Transit.
